Cardiovascular disease (CVD) is one of the leading causes of premature death in England.
Hypertension is the most significant risk factor for CVD and is one of the top five risk factors for all premature deaths and disability in England, affecting one in four adults. High blood pressure (Hypertension) often rarely shows symptoms until it causes serious harm and is too late. Alarmingly, an estimated 5.5 million people in the country have undiagnosed hypertension.
Early detection and subsequent treatment of hypertension is vital in reducing the risk of CVD via regular blood pressure checks, as untreated high blood pressure can result in severe health complications.

More commonly known as high blood pressure - is a serious condition where your heart has to work harder to pump blood around your body consistently. High blood pressure typically doesn't have any symptoms and the only way to know if you have hypertension is to have it checked. If untreated, the arteries can stiffen and narrow, making it easier for fatty material to clog them up and cause heart and circulatory diseases such as heart attack or stroke.

Blood pressure is the term used to describe the strength with which your blood pushes on the sides of your arteries as it's pumped around your body.
Low blood pressure (hypotension) is not usually a problem, although it can cause dizziness and fainting in some people.

This service aims to:
Identify people with high blood pressure aged 40 years or older (who have previously not had a confirmed diagnosis of hypertension), and refer them to general practice to confirm the diagnosis and for appropriate management
At the request of the GP practice, undertake ad hoc clinic and ambulatory blood pressure measurements; and
Provide another opportunity to promote healthy behaviours to patients

The free NHS Blood Pressure Monitoring Service is available for free to:
Adults who are 40 years old or over who do not have a current diagnosis of hypertension
Patients, by exception, under the age of 40 who request the service because they have a recognised family history of hypertension at the pharmacist’s discretion
Patients between 35 and 39 years old who are approached about or request the service at the pharmacist’s discretion
Adults specified by a GP practice for the measurement of blood pressure
